About North West Leicestershire

North West Leicestershire benefits from being part of the Golden Triangle area (the intersection of strategic roads) and is experiencing significant organic economic growth due to the development of the logistics and distribution sectors.

With a population of almost 93,500, North West Leicestershire is mainly a rural district, sitting at the heart of the National Forest, bringing in tourism from around the country. It is home to East Midlands Airport, which has replaced the mines as one of the region’s major employers. It is a key location for many large businesses, with the likes of Pall-Ex, United Biscuits and TNT having bases here, and large developments like Marks and Spencer distribution centre making North West Leicestershire their home.

We enjoy a central location in the UK with excellent transport links by road, rail and air. The cities of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester are each within 30 minute drives. East Midlands Airport is based in the district and provides international passenger transport and worldwide commercial freight as well as providing world-class hotel and conferencing facilities.

The UK’s major cities are all commutable from North West Leicestershire. We have easy access to the M1, and the A42/M42 runs through the length of the district. East Midlands Parkway train station provides regular trains connecting to London, Birmingham, the South West, Manchester and the North. Furthermore, the proposed HS2 route runs through the district with the currently planned East Midlands station at Toton sidings - only 3 miles north of the district boundary.

We have an excellent natural environment, market towns and attractive villages, which provide a great quality of life and provide a draw for tourism and recreation. Over half of the district is covered by the National Forest, a strategically important environmental project transforming 200 square miles and a major tourist attraction.

Construction of East Midlands Gateway, a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange that will create 6 million square feet of new employment space and over 7,000 jobs, began in January 2017.  We are within the area of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) as well as on the boundary of D2N2 LEP.

The district houses a number of prestigious densely populated business parks, which are home to high growth, award winning indigenous businesses. Some of the region’s fastest growing businesses are based in the North West Leicestershire.

The district also draws on three world-class universities and is home to the innovative Stephenson College and its studio school.
